Call for Papers:

Journal of International Students special issue on Competing Global South and Global North Knowledge Sets Contending for Dominance in the post COVID-19 Higher Education Space in Africa: Expanding Hegemonies or Generating Authentic Reciprocity?

We seek empirical, conceptual and analytical contributions from academics, researchers and educators from across the world for a special issue of the Journal of International Students focused on issues around competing Global South and Global North knowledge sets contending for dominance in the post Covid-19 higher education space, exploring the tension around expanding hegemonies and the possibilities of developing authentic reciprocity.

This JIS guest edited issue explores the spread of Global North praxis and theory in higher education, disciplinary knowledge, student development and support, teaching and learning, institutional-structural processes, and knowledge production and how these meet the emerging, confident, and self-assertive voices from the Global South, with particular focus on, but not exclusive, reference to Africa and Sub-Sahara Africa.

This JIS issue seeks to explore the nature of this newly emerging reciprocity by disentangling educational, pragmatic, and epistemological asymmetries.

The focus includes praxis, theory, educational partnerships, program partnerships, higher education policies, internationalization and student and staff mobility, student support and development.

The specific themes might include but are not limited to:

  • The relevance and appropriateness of export and import of knowledge sets
  • Absolute, situated, and contextual knowledge
  • Codified and implicit knowledge sets in S-N relations
  • Exploration of GS emergence and import of knowledge
  • Exploration of GN hegemonies and discourse expansion
  • Knowledge production trends, perhaps publishing challenges and differences between GS and GN
  • Attempts to disentangle the complex relations and power asymmetries between GS and GN
  • Reflections and examples of authentic reciprocity
  • Navigations of cross-cultural and multi-cultural spaces and perspectives
  • Perspectives about and from multi-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary lenses around diversity, inclusion, equity, and equality
  • Focus on collaborations, partnerships, internationalization, international students and programs, institutional cultures, student support and student development

We welcome submissions that employ a range of methodological approaches, explore complex realities, and provide new directions and insights for the rapid spread of knowledge sets, especially post Covid-19, from the Global North to the Global South.

We are especially interested in contributions that are co-authored with individuals from multiple institutions, multiple countries, and/or represent diversity and pluralism. We encourage international partners and collaborators to write jointly. We are very interested in multi-partner case studies and interdisciplinary research and perspectives, and also local GS or GN lenses on the emerging knowledge spread. We also seek conceptual, reflective and analytical submissions that explore critiques and offer new frameworks for considering the GS and GN engagements, which often are premised on different starting points, resources, discourses, contexts and conditions.

Author Guidelines

This special issue will include conceptual, narrative, explorative, empirical, analytic and multi-method research, studies and reflections (4,000-7,000 words including tables/figures and references). We expect selected authors to participate in rigorous peer review of submitted articles for this special issue. Peer review will consist of two peer authors, one from the special issue and at least one outside reviewer who is an expert in the specific topic and/or method. Individual manuscripts submitted for publication consideration are to be in English (United States spelling) with APA 7th edition style. Selection for full manuscript submission does not constitute guarantee of publication. Only manuscripts published are those who go through peer review and revision stages and receive final acceptance for publication by guest editors with the support of the Editor-in-Chief of the JIS. We encourage especially, but not exclusively, underrepresented and minority voices and encourage authors to cite, not exclusively, sources from underrepresented and minority contexts.
