About the Journal

Historia, owned and published by the Historical Association of South Africa (HASA), publishes one volume (comprising two issues) a year. The publication dates of the issues are May and November.

Authors are invited to submit original, previously unpublished research on aspects of southern African history, methodology, and historiography, as well as reviews, review articles, and contributions to the Historia blog.

The journal is independent and refereed, accredited by the South African Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), and indexed by IBSS, IBZ and the SciELO Citation Index/Web of Knowledge (Thomson Reuters).

The journal is available from the Sabinet webpage and as an open‐access journal, at SciELO South Africa and at UP Journals.

COPYRIGHT & PUBLISHING LICENCE

Historia is published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Licence (CC BY 4.0).

Copyright is retained by the authors.

Historia is a fully open access journal, which means that all articles are freely available on the internet immediately upon publication of the relevant issue.

Readers are welcome to reproduce, share and adapt the content without permission, provided the source is attributed.

PUBLICATION & ARTICLE PROCESSING CHARGES (APCs)

Article Processing Charges (APCs) are charged by HASA.

Historia currently charges Article Processing Charges of R200 per regular page and R250 per colour page. These will be invoiced by the Historical Association of South Africa (HASA) on publication of the journal issue.

Authors will receive two print copies of Historia free of charge.

As Historia is an accredited DHET approved journal, the cost of an article can be recouped from the earnings on research outputs. Authors employed by South African Universities and other Southern African or other national tertiary institutions should approach their institutions on their behalf regarding subsidising their page cost for articles. Authors are not expected to pay for articles themselves.

A limited number of articles by non-South African affiliated accredited authors and independent scholars may (at the discretion of HASA/the editors) be published per annum. In such instance, authors may be invoiced directly by HASA.

CONFLICTS OF INTEREST

The Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) defines conflicts of interest as ‘those which may not be fully apparent and may influence the judgment of authors, reviewers and editors’. A conflict of interest can be described as ‘those which, when revealed later, would make a reasonable reader feel misled or deceived’. Conflicts of interest can be personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial. Such interests must be declared by authors, reviewers, and editors. In case of uncertainty, rather disclose the potential conflict to Historia’s Editor-in-Chief.

ARCHIVING & SELF-ARCHIVING

Print copies of Historia are retained by HASA. The digital content of the journal is extremely valuable, and measures are in place to ensure both its current accessibility and long-term preservation.

Articles are published under a Creative Commons Attribution License.

Authors may archive the final published version of their articles in personal or institutional repositories immediately after publication provided acknowledgement is given to the original source of publication by inserting the DOI number of the article.
