Abstract

In light of South Africa's upcoming local government elections, this paper examines public participation as a vehicle for improving youth political engagement amid widening gaps between local government institutions and communities. It argues that youth participation in local government elections is shaped by structural socioeconomic constraints and political disillusionment that limit meaningful engagement in formal participatory processes.
