About the Journal

The Alternate Horizons Platform is not an accredited journal, it is a writing platform that publishes short academic articles and academically referenced opinion articles. The platform affirms diverse forms of scholarly engagement and diversity in terms of themes and perspectives, paradigmatic, disciplinary and methodological approaches and contexts of scholarship and application. Submissions of original short scholarly research-based articles, reflective discussions, opinion articles and working papers will be considered for publication.

This platform looks to encourage students from different fields and backgrounds to critically reflect and explore themes that are not directly related to their fields. Each month explores a different topic and encourages students of all persuasions to contribute their thoughts.

While articles that are published through Alternate Horizons do not conform to traditional academic articles, they are academically referenced and peer-reviewed to ensure the work’s quality.

Publications are uploaded regularly and are shared with other UP-aligned platforms to increase the audience of each article.

Review Process

All submitted manuscripts undergo an initial careful examination by members of the Editorial Executive Committee to ensure the author's submissions conform to best practices. Qualifying scholarly research-based articles and opinion articles are reviewed by at least one peer reviewer, who would typically be a member of the University of Pretoria.

Peer reviewers have proven scholarly and/or professional expertise in the subject matter of a manuscript. They are required to provide an objective judgment on the merits of a manuscript, point out the merits and propose ways of improving a manuscript. Reviewers should not have any conflict of interest and must treat all manuscripts confidentially.

Open Access Policy

The Alternate Horizons Platform is Open Access which means that all content is freely available without charge to the user or his/her institution. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, as underwritten by the license Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International Licence, without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author.

Publication Ethics

All submissions require proper acknowledgment of sources. Any research-based academic article that contains information gathered from primary sources (surveys, interviews, focus groups, etc.) must be submitted along with proof of ethical clearance.
