Call for submissions for November's edition

For this year’s final edition of Alternate Horizons we invite students to submit a short story or opinion article (600 – 1,500 word) for publication on our online writing platform, Alternate Horizons. Each month, we ask for articles that explore a different theme.

For November 2021, we are changing it up and asking for submissions that share stories that will be “inspiring the youth”. There are thousands of high school students who could achieve great things but who lack the motivation to even finish high school.

Your story could just be the inspiration a high school student needs to get them through matric!

Please submit a short story or opinion article that we can share with school students across South Africa.

Submission length:           600-1500 words excluding bibliography

Submission style:              Arial, 12pt, justified text

Reference style:                 Harvard method (See style guide here)

Please submit your short stories and articles by the 30th of November 2021. We will publish articles in January.

Review Process

Short stories and articles will be reviewed by researchers and academics and will be considered for publication based on their feedback. Submissions of previously published work will not be considered.

Submissions can be made here. Any questions or queries can be emailed to Andrea du Toit on
